Virtual Nursing Expansion: Leveraging Project Methodology and Integration Tools

Virtual nursing is rapidly emerging as a transformative model of care, offering innovative solutions to address staffing challenges, improve patient engagement and optimize clinical workflows. A key driver of its success is patient satisfaction—patients value the ability to connect with their care team in a hybrid environment that blends in-person and virtual interactions. Equally important is the experience of nurses; adoption and long-term sustainability depend on how well virtual care is integrated into their daily workflows. This session highlights how an academic medical center successfully implemented a Virtual Nursing Program by leveraging integration tools and digital infrastructure. Central to this effort was the seamless use of audio-video communication platforms embedded within the electronic medical record (EMR), enabling real-time collaboration between virtual and bedside teams. This integration not only enhanced the patient experience but also reduced documentation burden and improved nurse satisfaction. By aligning virtual care with existing systems and workflows, the program demonstrated how thoughtful design and technology integration can support a scalable, patient-centered model of care.
