Informatics in Action: Developing Nurse Innovators Through Structured Fellowship
Information
The Nursing Informatics Fellowship is a 12-month education and immersion program designed to empower bedside nurses with informatics knowledge, leadership skills and practical experience in healthcare technology optimization. As one of the largest users of clinical technology, bedside nurses are often underexposed to formal informatics training. This program addresses that gap by cultivating a pipeline of future nurse informaticists who can lead change, champion innovation and elevate nursing practice across care settings. Fellows engage in monthly sessions, 1:1 mentorship, and they complete a capstone project that directly impacts workflows, documentation burden or patient care outcomes. Program outcomes include improved nurse engagement with technology, optimization of KPHC workflows, and increased system-level collaboration between frontline staff and IT teams. The fellowship also supports succession planning and aligns with organizational goals such as Magnet designation, workforce development and advancing technology-enabled care. This session will outline the fellowship structure, measurable impact, and key lessons learned in launching a cross-regional informatics education initiative for bedside nurses. Attendees will walk away with a scalable model for developing nursing informatics talent within their organizations.
