Advancing Smart Pump Mobile Alarm Integration with PCIM
Information
Discover how Epic, B. Braun, Ascom & Innovision are partnering to show PCIM (Point of Care Identity Management) combined with EMR Smart Pump Integration to help fill a workflow gap today between the EMR, Smart Pump and the alarm management system/nurse taking care of the patient.
PCIM protocols now allow systems (i.e. EMR) to share patient to device association data. This allows integrated vendors (i.e. Smart Pump Vendors) to correlate patient/location information to an actively running infusion, leveraging existing workflows and using integration standard messaging to fill a gap that exists with many smart pump mobile alarms and appropriate alarm management integrations today.
Smart Pump Alarm Integration without PCIM: Auto program messages typically provide smart pumps not only infusion information but also patient/location information. When an auto program attempt fails or is not used, the pump does not receive patient or location details for the active infusion. Patient/location details are essential for alarm integration, the routing of pump alarms to mobile devices & enhanced clinical surveillance dashboards.
Smart Pump Alarm Integration with PCIM: When an auto program attempt fails or is not used, a nurse would typically back-associate the pump to the EMR so rates, volumes, etc. can be captured in the patient chart. Using this existing workflow, the EMR can now trigger a PCIM message to inform vendors (i.e. Smart Pump Vendor) of this patient-device association. Smart pump vendors can associate this patient/location information to the active infusion, and subsequently populate this detail in downstream pump alarm messages.
